Santa Clara County rangers secured an Argentine black-and-white tegu in Joseph D. Grant County Park after a five-day search following hiker sightings. The large, non-native lizard—known to prey on bird eggs, small mammals, and lizards, and carrier of Salmonella—was safely captured on June 12 near Grant Lake’s dam. Now in the custody of local animal services, the tegu may be adopted if no owner claims it. Authorities warn park visitors to report reptile sightings, citing the risk invasive species pose to native ecosystems.
